Once upon a time, there was a cunning jackal that lived in a jungle. The jackal used to pay frequent visits to a particular sweetmeat shop in the small town that was situated beside the jungle. Every night the jackal used to steal into the shop and gobble up sweet delicacies.

Every morning the shop owner or Sheth, after noticing the decrease in the number of sweets, wondered as to who was stealing the goodies. One day he came a little early and caught the jackal in the act. The shop owner gave the jackal a sound beating and threw him out.

The jackal played dead as a crowd gathered around him, expressing their sympathy for the beat-up jackal. Villagers talked about punishing the shopkeeper for his cruelty towards the jackal. Hearing this, the cunning jackal continued to play dead.

While the villagers talked about the incident, a man who was passing by requested the shopkeeper, "May I take the jackal's ears?" Since the jackal was playing dead, the Sheth said, "I don't have any problem with that. Please go ahead!" The jackal continued to lie motionless and bore the pain of his long ears being cut off by the stranger. This he did because he wanted the shopkeeper to be punished for beating him.

A little while later another man approached the Sheth and sought permission to take some of the jackal's teeth. Hearing this, the jackal got scared and though: "If my teeth are pulled out, I will not be able to hunt and probably die of hunger." Scared by this the jackal got up and ran away from the spot.

Running for his life, the jackal fell into a well that was full of coloured water. The well was used to dye clothes by washermen of the village. By the time the jackal managed to climb out of the well he had been dyed in a different colour, which was very different from his usual look.

When the jackal returned to the jungle, other animals were shocked and scared on seeing an animal with such a strange look and colour. Seizing this chance the cunning jackal identified itself as Kukaddam.

Kukaddam then did not waste much time and quickly proclaimed himself as the king of the forest. He surrounded himself with his kind - jackals and kept other animals lik tigers, lions and panthers at a distance.

But, how long can a jackal suppress his basic nature? Every night his jackal subjects would howl and call out at each other in the jungle. Kukaddam initially was successful in suppressing his desire to call out like his brethren. He feared that if he behaved like a jackal in any manner, his bluff would be caught.

The jackal's worst fears came true when one night he could not resist and joined the chorus of his brethren. Seeing Kukaddam in his true colors the lion growled and pounced upon the cunning jackal, and punished him.

In the heart of a dence forest, a Rishi used to stay in a small, humble hut made of leaves. Being very helpful by nature he had earned the respect of all animals staying in the forest. But, of all the animals, a dog that used to stay near the ascetic's hut used to be his favorite. The dog, on its part, used to guard the Rishi and his hut zealously.

One evening a ferocious jackal that was passing by the neighborhood attacked the dog. The dog got frightened and rushed into the hut seeking the ascetic's protection. The Rishi took pity on the dog and chanted mantras into some water that he took out of his kamandal. The Rishi then sprinkled the water on the dog and behold, it transformed into a jackal.

However, that was not the end of the tale. The very next moment a huge tiger came towards the saint's hut. Soon as it roared to announce its presence, the jackal lost heart and once again rushed into the hut seeking the Rishi's help. The saint once again changed its form, this time into a large tiger.

The saint's blessing worked again and the tiger turned tail and disappeared into the woods. However, the dog's nature changed and he started preying upon and eating other smaller animals.

When the dog-turned-jackal-turned-tiger was sleeping at an open space deep inside the woods, An elephant stormed into the area and trumpeted loudly. The tiger woke with a shock and saw the rampaging elephant uprooting a small tree and once again lost its courage. The dog-turned-tiger once again ran to the saint's hut for cover.

Within moments the tiger changed into an elephant. After getting used to his massive size and weight the dog-turned elephant headed straight for the nearby lake. It had a lot of fun showering water on itself with its powerful trunk.

Soon the forest resounded with the ferocious and noisy roars of a strange creature called Sharabh. With four arms, a huge mouth lined with large and sharp teeth and a huge dinosaur-like tail the fearsome creature ran amok in the forest. Once again the dog-turned-elephant got scared and ran for cover - straight to the ascetic's hut. The patient and kind saint changed it into a mirror-image of Sharabh.

The real Sharabh was shocked in seeing a creature like him emerging from the ascetic's hut. It soon ran away. So proud it became that the Sharabh turned upon the saint and attacked him. That proved to be a grave error. The Rishi instantly changed it back to the dog it always was and drove it out of the house. Then the dog realized his mistake but, then it was too late.

Once upon a time in Ujjain, there lived a poor Brahmin called Laxmidas. Twice everyday, at morning and again in the evening, Laxmidas used to give religious discourses and perform puja to eke out a living.

After some time, by the grace of God, a bony baby boy was born to Laxmidas and his wife. The couple's happiness knew no bounds and despite their poverty they were very content. Just a look on their son's face would get Laxmidas and his wife smiling.

Laxmidas used to have a mongoose as pet, which he used to treat as well as his own son. The mongoose too was very devoted to his master. Such was the trust between them that when Laxmidas and his wife were away the mongoose used to look after the baby boy.

One day, Laxmidas was away for a religious discourse at a neighboring village. His wife too had to go out, to the nearby river for water. While going out, Laxmidas' wife asked the mongoose to look over the baby.

When she left the house the baby was fast asleep in his cradle. The mongoose climbed on top of the cradle to keep vigil and guard his master's son. He used his elevated position on the cradle to keep a watch out for any enemies which might be lurking around.

Suddenly, a long and green snake slithered into the room where the baby lay in his cradle. With its long, thin tongue springing in and out in a rather menacing manner the snake looked very sinister and dangerous. The mongoose wasted no more time and pounced upon the snake. A bloody battle ensued between the two.

The commotion and noise of the fight woke up the child, who watched the battle, craning his neck over the cradle. Finally, after quite a while, the brave mongoose emerged victories and the sinister snake bit the dust, defeated. The mongoose too was tired after the fight. At this juncture Laxmidas' wife returned with, carrying water in an earthen pot. The mongoose, as was its usual practice, scampered up to here and licked her toes to point towards his victory.

However, the mongoose's mouth and tongue were bloody after its fight with the snake. Seeing blood on her foot, Laxmidas' wife immediately feared the worst and thought that the mongoose had killed her son. She threw the pot full of water on the small mongoose, killing it instantly. She rushed into the house and then realized here mistake.

Her son was ok, and she realized that the devoted little mongoose had actually saved her son. She realized that she had committed a big folly by acting without thinking or having patience to cross check here suspicions. The woman cried pitiably, angry and disappointed with hereself for the cruel act.

A prince and the minister's son were out hunting in the forests. Both grew hungry and exhausted after a long day's wandering. They found the cool shade of a tree and sat down to rest. Soon, the prince fell asleep, while the minister's son stayed awake and kept guard.

A while later a snake slithered towards the prince. Furiously hissing, it prepared to bite him. However, the minister's son was quick, he raised his sword. But before he could kill it, the snake spoke up, "This prince was my enemy in my past life. I cannot rest until I drink blood from his neck." The minister's son wanted to save his frined's life and he was also intelligent. "Then, what if i give you some of his blood to drink. Will that quench your hate?" Meanwhile, he collected some medicine herbs and bandaged the wound. A few hours later, the prince awoke and made preparations to proceed further. He said nothing and walked happily as if nothing had happened. Two whole days passed in the forests, yet the prince never reminded him of the event. it was the minister's son who began to grow impatient, as to why he was not questioned.

He finally said "Friend and master, you know that I climbed upon you and slit your throat, drew blood and then bandaged you. You even saw me do it. Still why haven't you yet questioned me or asked me for an explanation?"
"You are a friend of mine," the prince answered. "I believe that whatever you may have done must have been for my good. This is why I desire no explanation I have boundless trust in you - that my friend shall never ever do any harm to me."

There lived a large group of frogs inside this well. All except one were young and bubbly. The old frog was fondly called grandpa by the younger frogs. The old frog was very loving and caring by nature.

One day, due to some unknown reason, the frogs started quarrelling among themselves. They began abusing each other. The quarrel took a serious turn and the frongs started beating each other. Farmer: Lets hope it happens!
Fisherman: Now let us go home. We will come back after a few hours.

The fisherman returned after 4-5 hours. All the frogs had by now been trapped in the net.
Fisherman: Have a look for yourself. Didn't I tell you, my plan never fails me. See how they are shouting for help. Hold your patience for a few more minutes before you are all finally here.

As soon as the fisherman stretched out his hands to hold the net, the entire net came crashing. The reason... the joint that held the net to the rope tore off. All the frogs trapped inside the net fell back into the well. The fisherman took back his net with a sullen face. The farmer also became very disappoined at the turn of the events.

After the commotion settled into silence, the grandpa appeared in front of everyone. All the frogs realizing their mistake began apologizing to him.
Younger frogs: We are sorry grandpa. Please forgive us.

Grandpa finally spoke.
Grandpa: Listen! I started biting the rope when I noticed the net spread inside the well. While doing so, I lost my remaining teeth. Just have a look!

When the fishermen put their net in the water, Madhya swam away as quickly as he could. Lucky for him, he escaped just in time.

The Crows and the Black Snake - Motivational Story with Pictures

Once upon a time a family of crows lived in a huge banyan tree. There was a Father Crow, a Mother Crow, and many baby crows.

One day a huge snake came to live in the hole at the bottom of the tree. The crows were unhappy about this, but could do nothing. Soon Mother Crow hatched a few more eggs and some more baby crows were born. When the crows flew out in search of food, the snake ate up the babies.

When the crows returned, they could not find their babies. They hunted high and low, but to no avail.

After a few months, Mother Crow gave birth to some more baby crows. This time Mother Crow stayed home when Father Crow went out in search of food. Ignoring the fact that Mother Crow was keeping a watchful eye on her babies, the snake still slithered up the tree and attacked the babies. Mother Crow tried to fight the snake off, but she was not strong enough. Other crows came to her aid, but the snake had already eaten the little ones and crawled back into its hole.

When Father Crow returned, he found all the crows weeping. He consoled his wife who wanted to leave the tree house immediately. Father Crow said that this tree had been their home for many years and they must live here. He thought of asking a wise old fox for help in order to get rid of the snake.

The old fox came up with a brilliant plan. He told them to go to the river bank the next morning where the ladies of the royal family would be bathing. Their clothes and valuables would be kept on the river bank while the servants would be watching over them from a distance. The fox asked the crows to pick up a necklace and while away making a raucous noise. This would make the servants chase them to the tree where the crows would drop the necklace into the snakes's hole.

So the next morning when the crows flew to the river bank, Mother Crow picked up a pearl necklace and flew off as Father Crow cawed loudly to attract the servants' attention.

The servants ran after Mother Crow and reached the banyan tree where they saw her drop the necklace into the snake hole.

As the servants were trying to take the necklace out with the help of a long stick, the snake came out of the hole and hissed at them menacingly. The servants beat the snake to death.

And so Mother and Father Crow lived happily ever after in the banyan tree.

Once upon a time, there lived a big lion in a jungle. Every day he hunted and killed many animals to satisfy his hunger. The animals were worried that one day none of them would be left alive.

They all decided to go to the lion and find a solution to this problem. This little one did not want to be the lion's meal. He thought of a plan that would save his life as well as the lives of all the other animals in the jungle. The rabbit slowly made his way to the lion's den.

The lion was pacing up and down, extremely hungry. He was furious when all he saw was a little rabbit. He wanted to kill all the animals in a rage. The rabbit timidly explained that the animals had actually sent him six rabbits, but five of them were killed and devoured by another lion. The lion roared in anger. He wanted to know who this other lion was who dared to steal his food. The rabbit stuttered that it was a very big lion. He had warned the other lion not to eat him as his king would be very angry and definitely come to fight him. The rabbit went on to say that the other lion had called His Majesty an impostor and had challenged him to prove who was actually the king of the jungle.

The lion was furious. He asked the rabbit to take him to the other lion as he wanted to kill him. The little rabbit led the lion to the well and told him that the other lion was in there. The lion peered into the well and saw his own reflection. He thought it was the other lion. He let out a huge roar which echoed back at him.

He immediately jumped into the well to attack what he thought was the other lion. The lion dashed his head against the rocks and drowned. The jubilant little rabbit returned to other animals to spread the good news.

The honest farmer was convinced of what the banyan tree and other trees had said about themselves.

He had come a long way from his house and now entered a deep forest. He met a strange man. He had the face of a man but dressed in a funny manner. He was carrying a shining rod in his hand. The farmer asked, "Who are you? you have such funny appearance." The funny man replied, "I am the father of the trees you had tried to cut. I am grateful to you for having saved my children." Then he handed over the shining rod he was having in his hand to the farmer and said, "This is a magic rod made of gold. If you wave it thrice in the air, it will grant you your every wish. But your wish should be pure and it should not be improper."

The happy farmer returned to his house and wanted to test if what the strange man said was true. He waved the rod thrice in the air and wished for sweets and other eatables. Lo an behold! The Son

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war.

He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son.

About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, "Sir, you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art." The young man held out this package. "I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this." The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. "Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It's a gift".

The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected. The man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. We will start the bidding with this picture of the son.
“Who will bid for this picture?" There was silence.

Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, "We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one."
But the auctioneer persisted. "Will someone bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?" Another voice shouted angrily. “We didn't come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Gogh’s, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids!" But still the auctioneer continued. "The son! The son! Who'll take the
son?"

Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. "I'll give $10 for the painting." Being a poor man, it was all he could afford.
"We have $10, who will bid $20?"
"Give it to him for $10. Let's see the masters" someone shouted.
"$10 is the bid, won't someone bid $20?"

The crowd was becoming angry. They didn't want the picture of the son. They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections. The auctioneer pounded the gavel. "Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!"

A man sitting on the second row shouted, "Now let's get on with the collection!"

The auctioneer laid down his gavel. "I'm sorry, the auction is over."

"What about the paintings?"

"I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings. THE MAN WHO TOOK THE SON GETS EVERY THING!"
